The module in a nutshell

Ever walked through your processes and seen some operations running under pressure at full speed, whilst others seem to have all the time in the world? Ever wondered why you always seem to be waiting for some upstream operation to finish before you can start your job? This module on workflow rationalisation focuses on improving the way work flows through processes to ensure all parts of the process are operating at full efficiency. It introduces a number of concepts that will allow you to identify the most effective method of operation to maximise time spent on activities that are of value to the process.

The aim and outcomes of the module

The aim of this module is to teach the principles and techniques that will allow improvement teams to improve the efficiency of their workplace. After successfully completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the bottleneck in their processes
  • Generate a bottleneck management strategy to reduce the impact of the bottleneck on the system
  • Measure the effectiveness of process activities
  • Identify corrective actions that can provide an improved process balance
  • Describe the various different types of process layout and identify the strengths and weaknesses of each
  • Describe the features of good workstation design

Who Workflow Rationalisation is for

This module is designed to be applicable to members of improvement teams and those responsible for managing processes. It complements the contents of other in the Process Transformation Programme modules that deal with the Deliver faster core objective, equally it can be successfully studied on its own.

What’s in Workflow Rationalisation?

The module covers the following topics:

  • The process for the identification of a bottleneck in a process
  • The basic rules for dealing with process bottlenecks
  • Methods for calculating the effectiveness of process activities
  • Techniques for process balancing
  • Functional, cellular and flowline process layout designs
  • Principles of good workstation design
  • Principles of effective visual management

Important other information

Duration: Workflow Rationalisation lasts for one day and can be used by itself or in combination with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme.

Location: Ideally a room close to the workplace of participants, though it can be run off-site effectively.

In common with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme the module is designed to run successfully with between 8 to 18 participants.
