The module in a nutshell

Customers want delivery of a product or service exactly when they require it—certainly not after the due date and often not before it is needed either. Being able to deliver on time every time rely on effective planning and control of the operations system. This module introduces participants to output planning and control in relationship to different types of system.

The aim and outcomes of the module

The aim of this module is to teach the principles and practice associated with effective control of costs. After successfully completing the module, participants will be able to:

  • recognise the various types of operations systems 
  • explain the relationships of planning and control to the operations environment 
  • identify the difference between planning and control 
  • understand the difference between push and pull systems 
  • review the principles of requirements planning and its relationship to the operations system 
  • discuss the basic pitfalls in operations planning and control 
  • identify operations planning and control systems improvements

Who Output planning and control is for

This module is designed to be applicable to members of improvement teams and those responsible for managing projects. It complements the contents of other in the Process Transformation Programme modules that deal with the Deliver faster core objective, equally it can be successfully studied on its own.

What’s in Controlling costs

The module covers the following topics:

  • the planning and control model 
  • different types of operations system 
  • planning and control: the basic concepts 
  • the planning and control of one-off production 
  • planning and control of job shops 
  • batch and volume production: push and pull systems 
  • bottleneck scheduling 
  • identifying improvements

Important other information

Duration: Output planning and control lasts for one day and can be used by itself or in combination with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme.

Location: Ideally a room close to the workplace of participants, though it can be run off-site effectively.

In common with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme the module is designed to run successfully with between 8 to 18 participants.

Price: As a stand-alone module, £2,500 inclusive of all materials. This price does not include expenses which are charged at cost..
