The module in a nutshell

It is very rare for problems to be completely unexpected; usually a similar type of problem has occurred in the past. Of course ‘Stuff happens’, as they say, but risk isn’t bad—of itself. The problems arise when we fail to foresee risk, plan for it, or manage it. Conversely, if we can manage our way through risky projects we can earn very good rates of return. The ability to take on risk and overcome it are arguably two of the most important attributes of a good manager.

The aim and outcomes of the module

The aim of this module is to provide participants with ways of identifying, planning and managing the risks associated with undertaking an improvement or other type of transformation project. To achieve this aim it:

  • discusses different types of risk and their origins within a project context
  • examines ways of assessing the impacts of risk
  • suggests ways of contingency and mitigation planning
