The module in a nutshell

Operations managers and improvement team members frequently look upon preparing a budget for a project, course of action or period of operation as a chore that they could well do without and which diverts attention away from solving more pressing problems. You may feel like this yourself, but organizations, departments and projects that do not take budgeting seriously are prone to wander aimlessly and be pushed off course by current events. This module deals with the concepts, methods, and relationships involved in setting a realistic budget for a course of action or a period of activity.

The aim and outcomes of the module

The aim of this module is to teach participants how to set a realistic budget for a course of action or a period of activity. After successfully completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • explain the purposes and overall goals of budgeting
  • define different approaches to setting a budget and have a developed understanding of the behavioural implications of each of them
  • identify the requirements for setting an effective budget
