The module in a nutshell

The effective control and reduction of costs go hand in hand with financial performance whether of the organization as a whole, a department, an activity or a project. The principles are simple, their application is often complicated but in this module we cut through the accounting jargon to teach financial responsibility in a direct way.

The aim and outcomes of the module

The aim of this module is to teach the principles and practice associated with effective control of costs. After successfully completing the module, participants will:

  • understand the importance of cost control and it relationship to financial performance
  • understand different methods of cost determination and allocation
  • understand the ways of monitoring costs to ensure accurate and timely data
  • be able to develop a variance report
  • use commonly encountered methods of financial performance evaluation

Who Controlling costs is for

This module is designed to be applicable to members of improvement teams and those responsible for managing projects. It complements the contents of other in the Process Transformation Programme modules that deal with the Minimize cost core objective, equally it can be successfully studied on its own.

The module covers the following topics

  • the importance of cost control
  • responsibility for cost control and different approaches to cost management
  • the principles and practice of monitoring costs
  • determining variances
  • performance reporting

Important other information

Duration: Controlling costs lasts for one day and can be used by itself or in combination with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme.

Location: Ideally a room close to the workplace of participants, though it can be run off-site effectively.

In common with other modules in the Process Transformation Programme the module is designed to run successfully with between 8 to 18 participants.

Price: As a stand-alone module, £2,500 inclusive of all materials. This price does not include expenses which are charged at cost..
