Solve problems permanently - Break out of the cycle of recurring problems

The module in a nutshell

The problem with problems is not that they occur—in spite of our best efforts, stuff happens. Unforeseen circumstances will always conspire against us to disrupt the smooth operation of our production and management systems and upset our plans. The problem with problems is that we fail to prevent them from happening again.

We are often forced to take emergency corrective action, but all too often we fail to follow this up with permanent measures that would prevent the problem from re-occurring. As a result, we seem doomed to solve essentially the same or very similar problems time and time and time again. Most of our time is spent ‘on the back foot’, correcting recurring problems, when we should be moving forward by focusing our efforts on improving performance and introducing new systems.

The one-day BHW problem-solving workshop will provide you and your staff with a proven method for breaking out of the depressing cycle of problem re-occurrence.

Using the BHW problem solving approach successfully will help you to avoid:

  • incorrectly describing the problem
  • hurrying the problem-solving
  • poor team participation
  • no systematic or systemic process
  • lack of technical, problem-solving skills
  • management impatience
  • treating the symptom – no permanent corrective action
  • mis-identifying a cause as a root cause
  • not preventing re-occurrence

The aim and outcomes of the workshop

The aims of Solve problems permanently are to provide you with a systematic, effective way to:

  1. identify and describe problems.
  2. implement interim containment actions.
  3. identify the root cause(s) of problems.
  4. choose and implement permanent solutions.
  5. prevent problem re-occurrence.

After successfully completing the workshop participants will be able to:

  • use a team approach to solving problems.
  • understand and use the 8D problem-solving method.
  • use appropriate simple but effective analytical techniques to support the problem-solving method
  • use a standard format to report progress

Who Solve problems permanently is for

The module has wide applicability and is aimed at anyone who has responsibility for solving the problems that occur in operations systems whether production or transactional. It will help professionals, office workers, and production operators. The lessons learned and skills developed are easy to understand and instantly applicable. It works particularly well for teams.
