The module in a nutshell

Recently at a 5S workshop, a participant reported that one of her colleagues had spent a whole day looking for a container of a particular chemical. She found it eventually—the container had been wrongly labelled.

It’s not just production items. The Delphi Group consultancy based in Boston, estimated that 15 percent of all paper handled in business is lost and that 30 percent of all employee time is spent trying to find lost documents. That’s about 2½ hours a day.

5S is a proven approach to de-cluttering and organizing workplaces—whether they are offices or factories. 5S can be used by individuals, teams or whole organizations to transform untidy, poorly-organized working environments. It’s simple to apply, and dramatically reduces costs, promotes efficiency and effectiveness, boosts morale and is the essential precursor of other improvement activities.

This one-day module in BHW’s acclaimed Process Transformation Programme, is designed as a rapid application workshop. Participants are introduced to 5S concepts and techniques which they then apply immediately in their workplaces. Alternatively, the module can be combined with others in the PT Programme to create a tailored course to meet specific development needs.

Using the 5S approach successfully:

  • de-clutters the workplace
  • organizes the workplace
  • creates a clear layout
  • helps to maintain standards of orderliness and cleanliness
  • promotes continuous improvement in standards of orderliness and cleanliness
  • makes the workplace safer
  • reduces, stress, frustration and lifts morale
  • avoids wasted time and the costs associated with it

Who Organize your workplace with 5S is for

The module has wide applicability. It will help professionals, office workers, and production operators. The lessons learned and skills developed are easy to understand and instantly applicable. It works particularly well for teams.

What’s in Organize your workplace with 5S

The Rapid Application Workshop is a balanced mixture of classroom based learning and immediate application that takes place in the office or production area. It begins with a 5S Audit undertaken by participants, the objectives of which are to establish the opportunities for 5S improvement and to establish a datum against which future progress can be measured.

Each of the S’s in the method is taught:

  • sort: dispose of items that are no longer needed
  • set in order: organize equipment, the workplace and the floor or office
  • shine: means to clean the work area
  • standardise: make the first three Ss a habit
  • sustain: find ways of improving orderliness and cleanliness

To ensure that the 5S effort does not end with the completion of the workshop programme, participants prepare an implementation plan that they present to their workgroups.

Each participant in Organize your workplace with 5S gets:

  • 5S - The Foundation of Effective Operations, a self-learning pack.
  • the 5S Workbook providing detailed guidance on applying the approach.
  • a pack containing overheads and other materials.
