The module in a nutshell

BHW has been working closely with major clients to develop an innovative approach to ensuring that strategic aims and objectives are deployed effectively throughout the organization and linked clearly to projects and other actions. Based on a simple adaptation of quality function deployment or hoshin kanri, the BHW process is easy to understand and implement.

You need this approach because…

You’ve got

  • Vague, uncoordinated strategic aims, projects and actions.
  • Only tenuous connections between them.
  • Little understanding of the contribution of actions to financial performance.

You want

  • Clear strategic aims and actions that can be linked to financial performance and deployed to functions, departments and individuals.

You don’t want

  • A brilliant strategic plan that you’ve sweated over but which just gathers dust in a drawer. Lots of projects and actions which, though useful, don’t fit in with your strategic aims.
  • It’s a systematic process for developing aims, linking them to actions and deploying them throughout your organisation. The BHW Strategic Deployment Process will ensure clarity, agreement, commitment, and provide the basis for monitoring achievement.

The aim and outcomes of the module

  • clear aims—you’ll know and agree exactly what you want to do and when you’re going to do it by
  • a set of actions linked to aims—you will commit to how you are going to achieve your aims
  • a coherent deployment of aims and actions throughout your organisation—functions, departments, business units and individuals will know and be committed to undertaking the actions needed to achieve your agreed aims
  • an assurance that the planned actions will deliver sufficient bottom line benefit to achieve the agreed aims process that is based around the simple, though a rigorous, five stage methodology.
  • orderliness and cleanliness

Who Set the agenda is for

Like other modules in the Exercise leadership section of the Process transformation Programme, this module is designed to be used by the senior operations team: those people who have responsibility for determining the future shape of the operations system. It can also be used successfully by a mixture of senior operations and marketing directors, since it is important not only that the operations system is competent to produce what the market requires, but also that marketing sells the capabilities of the system. It is designed to complement other modules in the section.

What’s in Set the agenda

Participants learn to:

  • set aims that are realistic and clearly identified,
  • define the actions and projects that must be undertaken to achieve the aims
  • establish the relationship between aims and actions identifying aims without knowing how to achieve them is merely wishful thinking
  • check the validity of aims and actions
  • allocate responsibilities and sort out resource contentions
  • define the improvement in financial performance and other key performance indicators
  • present the operations plan in a single, easy-to-understand diagram
  • use the process to deploy to other levels in the company
  • ensure that the senior management team, each function and department, and every individual understands and is committed to the company’s operations aims and the part which they will play in achieving them.
